Stick around if you want to see some real-world examples of these principles in action. If you would like to see all of them, check out my folder on Flickr.

1. Minimalism

Exit sign at the Dunk’n Donuts drive-through that I frequently visit.

This sign was the first one I thought of when I was reading about minimalism and the use of space. Especially since I see the sign so much whenever I am getting myself a sweet treat. When reading the article Movie Posters Get the Pictogram Treatment from Media Dump I could conclude what the movies were without even seeing the title underneath. Similarly, the Dunk’n Donuts sign here is just abbreviated to DNKN. The U is not even noticeable that it is missing because your mind can fill in the blanks with the rest of the brand name. Next time, when you are getting your favorite coffee, see if you can see something like this!

2. Dominance

Decorations for Kings Dominion’s Halloween Haunt maze, MonsterCon.

I took this picture during a lights-on tour of one of the Kings Dominion Haunted houses, MonsterCon. Typically, this design would be seen in a much darker environment, as you are swiftly walking by to get away from the scare actors trying to scare you. I think it’s really important to highlight that, because if this were a design that would be outside of the maze in the midway, I would have a lot of critiques for this. However, since you are going so quickly though I think this is a perfect design. With the use of dominance, you can get the main point, which is MonsterCon. If you look a little deeper, you can see the faded skull underneath the logo and King’s Dominion on top, which, according to Vanseo Design, would be the sub-dominants. Altogether, these elements make a great and effective design.

3. Color

Catnip tag at a pet store in Culpeper that I went to last weekend.

Color is something that can make or break your design. You can have really good content, but if the colors are clashing, then it’s going to be difficult for a person, or in this case, a customer, to read. In Karen Kavett’s DIY video about color theory, you want to avoid clashing primary colors (red, yellow, and blue). Instead, you want to pick colors that go along with the colors inside that primary. In this tag for Catnip, there are bright yellow and red colors prominently, and that’s about it. The green at the bottom tries to save the design but falls short. Having the red and yellow without any other colors to help balance them out makes the design a lot weaker. Needless to say, I did not buy this product.

4. Typography

Shelfing cart label at the Simpson Library at the University of Mary Washington.

Don’t get me wrong, I am a lover of fun fonts, but there are times when this is not necessary. Like, for instance, this shelving cart. This does a great job at dominance, just like the MosterCon sign, it is the focal point of the design. However, where this design has its faults, in in the font. The shadow is not necessary and, combined with the poor font choice, makes for a bad design. Bringing up Karen Kavett’s DIY again, who also did a video about Typography, she talks about the diffrent types of instances for using certain fonts. This type is considered to be a decorative font, even though it should be a serif font instead, since it is more informational. At least the shelfing cart itself is pretty self-explanatory on its own, even without the sign.

Conclusion

And that’s a wrap! Thank you for coming with me on this adventure. I hope you were able to learn something that you can use in your design journey. Were you familiar with any of the concepts I talked about? Are there any ones that I didn’t talk about that you know of? Let me know in the comments below.
